Musikwela brings Filipino values to life through music, puppets and meaningful stories

A new generation of Filipino children is being invited to learn, sing and discover important life lessons through Musikwela, an educational entertainment platform that combines music, storytelling and colorful puppet characters.
Designed to make learning enjoyable and relatable for young audiences, Musikwela uses original characters and stories to introduce values that children can apply in everyday life. At the center of its world are the Musikscouts, a group of young characters whose different personalities highlight creativity, compassion, curiosity and love for family and community.
Among them is Potpot, an energetic eight-year-old red puppet with a passion for music. A guitar player who learned from his grandfather, Potpot sees songs as more than entertainment. For him, music can tell stories, connect people and transform simple experiences into lasting memories. His loyal dog, Pawpaw, often accompanies him on his adventures.
Six-year-old Lala, meanwhile, represents the artistic side of the group. The pink puppet enjoys drawing and painting and has a gift for seeing possibilities in ordinary objects. Her character also emphasizes kindness and empathy, particularly the idea that genuine concern for others is best demonstrated through actions.
Completing the trio is Biboy, the youngest at five but physically the biggest among the furry characters. Fascinated by nature, plants and experiments, Biboy is an inquisitive young tinkerer who enjoys discovering how things work and finding creative ways to use what he learns.
Behind the playful characters, however, is a demanding production process.
Ellen, one of the creative forces behind Musikwela, revealed that bringing puppets convincingly to television requires careful coordination among performers and the production team. Puppeteers sometimes have to work from difficult positions simply to achieve the proper camera angle and make the characters’ movements appear natural on screen.
The hard work will soon result in more content for Filipino families. Musikwela is preparing to release five new 30-minute episodes in November, coinciding with National Children’s Month.
Produced by Ideasquest, Inc. together with the National Council for Children’s Television (NCCT), an attached agency of the Department of Education, the episodes will tackle subjects that go beyond traditional classroom lessons. Topics include respect for elders, appreciation of indigenous cultures, autism awareness and understanding, disaster preparedness and care for the environment.
The upcoming episodes will be made accessible through Musikwela’s digital platforms, including its website, Facebook and YouTube, with audiences also able to follow its activities through Instagram and TikTok.
Musikwela is already building a library of children’s content. Prior to the upcoming releases, the platform had produced 13 videos, ranging from animated musical material to the documentary “Ang Bayani at Ang Kanyang Sandok.”
For Ellen, however, the bigger ambition is not simply to produce more episodes. She hopes Musikwela will eventually establish itself as a distinctly Filipino children’s educational entertainment brand—one whose songs and characters become part of children’s formative years.
She envisions youngsters growing up alongside characters such as Yumi, Lala, Potpot and Biboy, learning lessons from them while developing positive values along the way.
At its core, Musikwela’s mission rests on a simple idea: educating children can also mean entertaining them, inspiring their imagination and giving them characters they can consider friends.
By weaving Filipino values into music and storytelling, the program hopes that every song and adventure contributes to something much larger—the formation of young people who will someday help shape the country themselves.
