Hitachi Vantara has committed to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its global value chain by fiscal year 2040, with its emissions-reduction targets independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative.

The data storage and hybrid cloud subsidiary of Hitachi Ltd. said its near-term targets include reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 98 percent by FY2030 from an FY2024 baseline.

It also aims to cut Scope 3 emissions by 51 percent per usable petabyte of storage capacity sold by FY2036 and by 97 percent by FY2040.

In FY2025, Hitachi Vantara said it reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 43 percent, partly by sourcing 50 percent of its energy from renewable sources.

The company said improving data center efficiency has become increasingly important as artificial intelligence and growing data workloads drive infrastructure and energy demand.

“Customers increasingly expect their technology suppliers to demonstrate that their climate commitments are credible and backed by action,” Hitachi Vantara senior vice president for business strategy Simon Ninan said.

The company is also developing technology aimed at reducing customers’ energy consumption and carbon footprint.

Hitachi Vantara cited Indian media company Malayala Manorama, which reported cutting power and cooling costs by 70 percent and data center rack space by 66 percent using its infrastructure.

Other customers cited by the company include DestekBank, which reported a 25 percent reduction in data center energy consumption, and Garanti BBVA, which estimated its Hitachi Vantara storage systems consume about 30 percent less energy than competing systems.
