Salesforce executive Akshay Vajpayee has encouraged Filipino professionals to pursue opportunities that develop their skills rather than remain in comfortable positions, drawing from his career across consulting, e-commerce and global technology.

Vajpayee, vice president of corporate marketing at Salesforce, where he leads key marketing functions for Slack, said his career decisions have been guided by opportunities to gain experience and assume greater responsibility.

“I have never made a decision I did not think carefully about first,” Vajpayee said. “The moves look unconventional from the outside. But from the inside, they follow a very clear logic.”

His career began at management consulting firm McKinsey, where he worked across the United States, Germany, Japan and Canada.

The experience taught him that business strategies must adapt to different markets and organizational cultures.

“There is no universal playbook. Every market and leadership culture has its own internal logic,” he said.

Vajpayee later left consulting to take on operational responsibilities in Southeast Asia’s e-commerce industry, including overseeing teams and business operations in the Philippines and Vietnam.

He said the move allowed him to gain experience implementing business strategies rather than simply recommending them.

“Consulting gave me extraordinary breadth, but I eventually realized that breadth could become a ceiling if I never stayed long enough to own the consequences of a decision,” he explained.

Taking on major responsibilities before turning 31 also required him to develop leadership skills beyond individual decision-making.

“At that scale, leadership was no longer about personally making more decisions. It was about building capable leaders, establishing clear decision rights, and creating operating systems that allowed the organization to make consistently good decisions,” Vajpayee said.

After returning briefly to consulting, he joined Salesforce to apply his operational experience to the challenges of a global technology company.

He said his exposure to both consulting and corporate management reinforced the importance of aligning business strategies with teams, incentives and operational capabilities.

For young Filipino professionals working in technology, financial services and other competitive industries, Vajpayee emphasized the importance of continuous learning.

“They must optimize for learning, not comfort. Every time I face a fork in the road, I ask myself which path will teach me more,” he said.

“That question has led me to some uncomfortable places, but it has also led to every opportunity I am most proud of.”
