A 58-year-old French passenger bound for Cebu was arrested at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 2 in Pasay City after allegedly making a bomb-related remark during the check-in process on Friday, 11 September.

Authorities said on Saturday that initial investigation showed that the passenger was asked to place his backpack on the baggage weighing counter and identify its contents. He allegedly replied, “I have a gun and a bomb.”

The remark prompted airport authorities to activate aviation security protocols.

Personnel from the PNP Aviation Security Group and NAIA Police Station 2 responded, while explosive ordnance disposal and explosive detection dog units conducted clearing operations.

The passenger’s baggage and the surrounding area were cleared of explosives and incendiary materials.

Police subsequently arrested the French national for alleged violation of Presidential Decree 1727, or the Anti-Bomb Joke Law.

He was informed of the reason for his arrest and apprised of his constitutional rights under the Miranda Doctrine in a language he understood.

The passenger remained in the custody of NAIA Police Station 2 for documentation and the filing of appropriate criminal charges.
