  • The Gymnastics Association of the Philippines (GAP) is doing everything it can to keep Carlos and Eldrew Yulo focused as they chase historic success in the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.

GAP president Cynthia Carrion said they have turned down appearances and interviews involving the Yulo brothers to give them enough time to train and prepare for their Asiad debut.

The Filipino gymnasts will see action at the Nagoya City General Gymnasium from 20 to 24 September, with both brothers among the country’s top medal hopes.

“I have been reminding Carlos a little bit because he has so many events and commitments. I tell him, ‘Are you sure you’re still training? Don’t forget your training,’” Carrion said.

“Whenever people call me about appearances and other activities, I sometimes say, ‘I’m sorry, let’s give Carlos time to train,’ because he’s always being asked to attend events and do interviews.”

Carlos and Eldrew are making their Asian Games debuts alongside other leading Filipino medal hopefuls, including pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena and boxers Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas.

The brothers have been training at the Tokushukai Gymnastics Club in Japan as part of their preparations and to help them acclimatize to the conditions ahead of the competition.

Carrion believes both Carlos and Eldrew have legitimate chances of bringing home medals in several apparatuses.

In fact, she said the siblings’ friendly rivalry could even work to their advantage.

“I don’t know about Carlos and Eldrew — sometimes Eldrew can beat his brother. It’s good competition,” Carrion said.
