For the first time, the Manila Studies Conference will be held outside Metro Manila, bringing scholars to Cavite to examine the intertwined histories, traditions, and cultural heritage of Manila and the province.

National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) chairman Regalado Trota Jose Jr. will deliver the keynote address at the 34th Manila Studies Conference, to be held 15 to 16 September at the Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite.
Organized by the Manila Studies Association (MSA), the conference will be held outside Metro Manila for the first time. Its theme, “Manila-Cavite Relations,” will be examined through papers by scholars and researchers, many of them based in Metro Manila and Cavite.
Jose will present “The Construction of the Parian Church, Manila, in the 18th Century.” Independent researchers Felice Prudente Sta. Maria and Ige Ramos will delve into culinary heritage through “The Capital’s Cuisine: Manila as a Philippine Gastronomy Determinant” and “Symbiotic Flavors of the Manila-Cavite Culinary Axis: Infrastructure, Naval Traditions, and the Socio-Cultural Construction of Gastronomy,” respectively.
Other presentations are “Anting-Anting and the Noveleta-Quiapo Cultural Exchange” by Jeffrey Lubang of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas; “A Preliminary Look at the Entwined Histories of Manila and Cavite Puerto (1565-1898)” by Maria Eloisa de Castro of the NHCP; “Rituals and Feasts for San Telmo: Worship and Devotion in Cavite Puerto and Elsewhere” by Romeo Galang Jr. of Far Eastern University (FEU)-Manila; and “Las Calles de Cavite Puerto” by Fr. Virgilio Mendoza of the Ministry on the Cultural Heritage of the Church of the Diocese of Imus.
Also on the program are “Bridging Heritage and Modernity: A Qualitative, User-Centered Study on Lived Experiences and Priorities to Guide the Revitalization of Samonte Park” by architect Raphael Valero of the Cavite City government; “Fort San Felipe: Property Rights, Access, and the Conditions of Heritage Conservation” by Mairene Leynes of the University of Asia and the Pacific; and “Pagwawasto ng Kasaysayan: Ang Papel nina Henry Ruppenthal at Nellie Kellog sa Kronolohiya ng Pagdakip kay Macario Sakay noong 1906 sa Cavite” by Daniel Anciano of the Cavite Studies Center at De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.
The conference will also feature “Living History: An Immersive Approach to Heritage Tourism” by Edwin Guinto of the Cavite Historical Society; “A Report on the Pulpit of Maragondon Church” by Bryan Ferrer of the Ministry on the Cultural Heritage of the Church of the Diocese of Imus; “Controversies and Misconceptions on Emilio Aguinaldo” by Ryan Aguinaldo of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Manila; “Terms of Containment: Dam-Related Vocabularies of the Tagalog People of Greater Manila” by independent researcher EA Sembrano; and “Beyond Bloodline: Interpreting History in the Case of the GBR Museum” by Billy Malacura of FEU-Manila and the GBR Museum.
