Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. and outgoing Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya reaffirmed the strengthened defense partnership between the Philippines and Japan during the envoy's farewell call.
The two officials discussed ongoing defense cooperation as the countries mark the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations this year.
Teodoro thanked Endo for his contributions to bilateral defense ties during his tenure, particularly the implementation of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA), conclusion of the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement (ACSA), negotiations for a Security Information Agreement and continuing equipment and technology cooperation through Japan's Official Security Assistance (OSA).
Earlier this year, Teodoro and Endo attended the turnover of five coastal radar systems provided under Japan's fiscal year 2023 OSA program on 11 February 2026.
The officials also discussed greater cooperation between Manila and Tokyo and with other like-minded countries under their shared commitment to a Free and Open Indo-Pacific.
The Philippines and Japan currently co-chair the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting-Plus Experts' Working Group on Maritime Security for the 2024-2027 cycle.
The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has also regularly participated in Maritime Cooperative Activities within the Philippines' exclusive economic zone since 2024.
Teodoro conferred the Outstanding Achievement Medal on Endo in recognition of his contributions to strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the Philippines and Japan.
The award was presented as a symbol of friendship and gratitude as Endo concludes his tenure as Japan's ambassador to the Philippines.
