BAGUIO CITY — Several local government units in the Cordillera region suspended classes Monday as parts of three provinces were placed under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 due to Tropical Depression Luis.

TCWS No. 1 was hoisted over the eastern and southern portions of Apayao, eastern Kalinga, eastern Mountain Province, and eastern Ifugao as Tropical Depression Luis continued to bring heavy rains and strong, gusty winds across Northern Luzon.

In Baguio City, classes from preschool to senior high school in both public and private schools were suspended. In Kalinga, the Tabuk City government announced the automatic suspension of preschool classes, while the municipality of Sablan, Benguet, despite not being under any TCWS, suspended classes from preschool to Grade 6 in anticipation of heavy rains brought by the weather disturbance.

Several other local government units have yet to announce whether classes will be suspended.

As of PAGASA's latest advisory, the center of Tropical Depression Luis was located near Aurora, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 70 kph. Enhanced by the southwest monsoon, the weather system is bringing scattered rains and thunderstorms over Metro Manila, Central Luzon, the Ilocos Region, and parts of the Visayas.

PAGASA warned residents in low-lying and mountainous areas to remain alert for possible flash floods and landslides.

The rest of the country is expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms.

Moderate seas with waves ranging from 1.2 to 2.5 meters are expected over the northern and central Luzon seaboards, while slight to moderate seas with wave heights of 0.6 to 1.5 meters will prevail over southern Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao.
