A Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officer was killed when the car he was driving collided head-on with a closed van truck along Fortich Street in Purok 9, Barangay Sumpong, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, shortly before midnight Friday.
Police identified the victim as Jail Officer 1 Dwight Kent Fabre Elmedulan, 28, a resident of Macabalan, Cagayan de Oro City, who was assigned to the BJMP-Malaybalay City Jail.
The truck driver was identified only as John, 44, a resident of Panabo City, Davao del Norte.
Investigation showed that at about 11:30 p.m., Elmedulan was driving a Hyundai Eon along the national highway when he allegedly lost control of the vehicle and rammed into an oncoming Shacman closed van truck.
The impact hurled the car onto the sidewalk on the opposite lane, pinning Elmedulan in the driver’s seat.
Personnel from the Malaybalay Emergency Rescue Unit responded to the scene and extricated the victim from the vehicle. He was rushed to Bethel Hospital but was declared dead on arrival shortly after midnight.
The truck driver surrendered to police and may face charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property.
