In the wake of the troubling incidents of school violence that have recently shaken our country, I have witnessed parents becoming more engaged than ever before.
Last week, the Las Piñas City Council unanimously approved the Safe Schools Ordinance (Ordinance No. 2215-26, Series of 2026), a landmark measure that places the safety, well-being, and future of every student at the center of our community’s responsibility. The ordinance has been forwarded to the Office of the Mayor for her concurrence and signature.
While its approval is certainly a milestone, I believe the more important journey begins after the ink has dried. Laws can provide direction, but it is people, with generous hearts, who bring them to life.
One of the most inspiring conversations I recently had was with a school principal who spoke warmly about the invaluable role of the Student-Parent-Teacher Association (SPTA). Every school day, parent volunteers welcome the children at the school gates, help maintain a safe and orderly environment, and assist school personnel during dismissal. They patiently observe, guide and watch over the students as though they were their own children.
These are quiet acts of generosity that often go unnoticed. No applause accompanies a parent who spends an extra hour helping monitor the school entrance. No headlines celebrate a mother who comforts an anxious child before class or a father who volunteers to help keep watch after dismissal. Yet these simple acts remind us that kindness is often found in ordinary moments.
In the wake of the troubling incidents of school violence that have recently shaken our country, I have witnessed parents becoming more engaged than ever before. Many are extending themselves beyond traditional volunteer work. They listen to students who are struggling, encourage children who feel isolated, and work closely with teachers whenever behavioral concerns arise. In many ways, they have become partners in guidance, helping shape not only the students’ academic success but also their character, compassion and emotional well-being.
Teachers, too, continue to give far more than what is written in their job descriptions. They recognize when a child seems unusually quiet, when someone may be carrying an emotional burden, or when friendship has given way to bullying. Together with parents, they are the first line of care for our young people.
This beautiful partnership between parents and teachers reminds me that raising a child has never been the responsibility of one person alone. It truly takes a community. When families, schools, barangays, and local government work hand in hand, our children grow up surrounded not only by protection but also by love.
As Scripture reminds us, “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” (1 John 3:18)
That verse perfectly captures the spirit of the SPTA. Love is not merely spoken, it is demonstrated through presence, patience, sacrifice and service.
As we prepare for the full implementation of our Safe Schools Ordinance, I hope more parents will discover that their presence is one of the greatest gifts they can offer. A child who knows that caring adults are watching over them walks into school with greater confidence and hope.
The safest schools are not built by walls, cameras, or policies alone. They are built by generous hearts: parents who care, teachers who nurture, and communities that choose, every single day, to protect every child as one of their own.
