Las Piñas has no place for violence

Real strength is never measured by anger or revenge. It is found in self-control, kindness, forgiveness and the courage to seek help when emotions become overwhelming.

Las Piñas has no place for violence

Following the resumption of face-to-face classes at San Jose National High School after a tragic campus incident, Education Secretary Sonny Angara reaffirmed the Department of Education's (DepEd) commitment to ensuring a safe learning environment through enhanced security measures and expanded mental health support. To help learners recover from the trauma, DepEd has also expanded flexible learning options while implementing stricter campus safety measures.

  • Las Piñas school violence

There are moments in public service when words seem painfully inadequate.

The heartbreaking death of a 13-year-old Grade 9 student of Las Piñas National High School on 31 July has left our city grieving. Behind the headlines is not merely another incident of school violence, but a child whose dreams ended far too soon, parents whose embrace is now replaced by unimaginable sorrow, classmates who will forever remember the empty chair inside their classroom, and a community searching for answers.

What began as a seemingly minor misunderstanding ended in unimaginable tragedy when the young student was fatally stabbed by a fellow learner, an act of violence that forever changed two families and an entire community.

As a mother, my heart breaks for both families. One mourns the loss of a beloved son. The other now faces a future forever changed as they struggle with the painful consequences of a tragic decision. In moments like this, anger alone cannot heal us. Only compassion, accountability, and collective action can.

Generosity is often associated with giving money, food and material things. But perhaps the greatest generosity we can offer today is the generosity of our hearts.

It is the generosity of parents who choose to spend time listening instead of merely asking about grades. It is the generosity of teachers who notice the quiet child sitting alone at the back of the classroom and gently ask, “Are you alright?” It is the generosity of classmates who refuse to laugh at bullying, choosing instead to defend the lonely, include the excluded and offer friendship before conflict takes root.

I have witnessed many examples of this kind of generosity in Las Piñas. Neighbors quietly preparing meals for bereaved families. Volunteers comforting children after calamities. Guidance counselors patiently helping students carry burdens that cannot be seen. Barangay workers checking on families who are silently struggling. These simple acts may never make headlines, yet they save hearts every single day.

This tragedy reminds us why the Las Piñas City Safe Schools and Child Protection Ordinance of 2026 was crafted with prevention, not reaction, as its guiding principle. Its provisions on behavioral threat assessment, mental health support, psychosocial intervention, family conferences, restorative practices, and stronger coordination among schools, parents, barangays, health professionals and law enforcement are not merely legal requirements. They are safeguards designed to protect lives before violence occurs.

I also commend Mayor April Aguilar-Nery for immediately directing the City Social Welfare and Development Office, together with the Department of Education, to provide counseling and psychosocial support to students after the funeral.

The City Government likewise extended funeral assistance to the bereaved family, while the Department of Social Welfare and Development immediately provided financial assistance and committed livelihood support. These are reminders that in our darkest moments, compassion must always accompany governance.

To our parents: know your children beyond their report cards. Listen carefully to what they do not say. Sometimes silence is a cry for help.

To our young people: real strength is never measured by anger or revenge. It is found in self-control, kindness, forgiveness and the courage to seek help when emotions become overwhelming.

To every Las Piñero: let us also be generous in the way we use social media. Before sharing photographs, videos, or unverified information, let us remember that grieving families deserve dignity more than our curiosity. Compassion should always travel faster than rumors.

Scripture reminds us in Romans 12:21: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

May the loss of this young life awaken not only our grief but also our responsibility. Let this be the moment we become more present as parents, more attentive as teachers, more compassionate as neighbors, and more united as one community.

Because every child who walks through the school gate deserves to return home safely.

And there must never again be a place for violence in Las Piñas.
