Chinatown living in ‘super prime location’

Ongpin Tower stands as the developer’s maiden signature project, a 52-story, low-density vertical village commanding the rare, historic tri-corner intersection of Ongpin, Gonzalo Puyat and F. Torres streets in Binondo, Manila. Wong said in her speech during the recent dinner helmed by China Blue by Chef Jereme Leung in Conrad Manila. Titled “Symphony and Senses: A Celebration of Modern Chinatown Living,” the intimate media experience brought to life Ongpin Tower’s vision of “Modern Chinatown Living” through culture, cuisine, design, conversation and connection.

“Modern Chinatown living is about honoring Binondo’s cultural significance while reimagining it for the next generation,” said Wong. “Through Ongpin Tower, we aim to create an address that reflects legacy, community, refinement and the evolving lifestyle of Filipino-Chinese families and discerning urban homeowners.”

Their vision for Ongpin Tower, she noted, is “to create a legacy development that respects Binondo’s history, contributes to its future and gives families a meaningful place to grow across generations.”

“We didn’t want to create, you know, a typical another development because it’s in Ongpin, so we wanted the address to be the identity of the project itself because Binondo is very iconic. I’m sure everybody knows Binondo and, you know, the rich culture and heritage that it has. So we really wanted to respect the heritage of Binondo. Well, also of course, pushing it to become a luxury development and elevating the standard of living in Binondo.”

Modern skyscraper in a traditional setting

Specifically, “modern Chinatown living” means Ongpin Tower aims to “create modern comforts and living standards” that includes “family size spaces,” “well thought-out” floor plans and “spacious amenities,” Wong noted.

Tan, Ongpin Tower principal architect, shared in a panel discussion during the media dinner that the design vision behind Ongpin Tower is “to deliver a blend of modern skyscraper design in traditional Chinese setting.”

Architect Tan of MOT Architectural Designs shared the architectural intent behind the tower, highlighting how its design brings together modern high-rise living with subtle Chinese influences.

“Rising above 52 stories, it is envisioned as a landmark, a pillar in the heart of Chinatown,” he affirmed. “Balance comes from understanding that heritage doesn’t have to be expressed literally. Rather than replicating traditional Chinese architecture, we interpreted its principle through contemporary ways.”

Architect Rowland Agullana, Principal Architect of Cube System, lead landscape design partner, shared how Ongpin Tower’s landscape and greenery help create moments of calm within the energy of Binondo.

“The vision was to create a culturally-rooted yet contemporary landscape that reflects the identity of Binondo,” he affirmed. “Binondo is very energetic, diversified, active, so our team wants to mirror-effect that energy in the external facade and by having green wall layers also in the gardens — from the façade, transitioning to the more serene landscape above (the tower).”

“Our objective was to design a high luxury residential environment that would feel comfortable and residential rather than strictly formal,” added Monica Frances S. Belen, design director, M Concept Design.

With Ongpin Tower set for turnover by Q2 of 2027, the conversation also reinforced the project’s progress and the confidence behind its execution — from design vision to construction delivery.

Ironcon Builders and Development Corporation president and chief executive officer Jaime Lim spoke about the discipline, precision and workmanship required to bring the 52-story development to life.

“There’s discipline in all stages — from planning to construction. We made sure that it’s unique and consistent structurally and by workmanship,” he asserted.

According to him, his role as Lead Construction Partner does not stop at building but also assuring quality workmanship for future generations.
