Alexsandra Diaz made heads turn after setting two records while winning three gold medals in the women's 48-kilogram category of the IWF World Youth Championships in Colombia last Sunday.
The 15-year-old niece of Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz broke the world youth record in the clean and jerk after lifting 98kgs, surpassing the International Weightlifting Federation standard of 97kgs set in 2025.
Diaz then broke another IWF world youth record after posting a total lift of 175kgs , eclipsing the previous mark of 173kgs .
Although her snatch of 77kgs did not break any records, it was enough for her to complete the golden trifecta.
Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella told DAILY TRIBUNE that this is only the beginning for Diaz and the other young Filipino lifters competing in South America.
"This is where it all starts. In preparation for the Asian Games and ultimately, the Olympics. We compete against the best in the world," Puentevella said in a short message.
Jay-R Colonia added another gold medal to the Philippines' haul after lifting 140kgs in the men's 56-kilogram category. He also won two silver medals in the snatch with 109 kilograms and in the total with 249kgs.
In the women's 44kgs division, Althea Bacario captured a silver in the clean and jerk with a lift of 80 kilograms and a bronze medal in the total with 140 kilograms.
Also set to represent the Philippines are two-time Asian Youth Games medalist Jhodie Peralta, who will compete in the women's 53kg class, Rhianne Cabalida in the 69kg division, and Jea Mae Palagtiw in the 77kg category.
Kirby Kent Alas-as will be the other male representative for the Philippines as he competes in the 60kg division.
