Pasay checkpoint chase leads to arrest of two men; gun, grenade seized

Southern Police District
Two motorcycle riders were arrested during a predawn police chase in Pasay City on Sunday after allegedly attempting to evade a routine checkpoint, with authorities recovering a loaded revolver and a live hand grenade from the suspects.
The Pasay City Police said the suspects, identified only by their aliases "Daniel," 23, and "George," 20, both residents of Barangay 1, Pasay City, are facing complaints for violations of Republic Act No. 10591, or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, Republic Act No. 9516 on the unlawful possession of explosives, and Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code for resistance and disobedience to persons in authority.
The arrests stemmed from an "Oplan Sita" checkpoint conducted at around 3:35 a.m. along Roxas Boulevard corner San Juan Street in Barangay 7.
According to the Pasay police, officers flagged down a black Yamaha NMAX motorcycle without a license plate carrying two men wearing helmets and face-concealing balaclavas.
Instead of stopping for inspection, the motorcycle's driver allegedly accelerated toward Buendia Avenue, prompting police officers to pursue the vehicle.
Authorities said the chase ended along San Juan Street after officers cornered and blocked the motorcycle.
Police alleged that the driver attempted to pull a firearm tucked in his waistband when officers approached, triggering a brief struggle before he was subdued and disarmed.
The passenger, meanwhile, allegedly reached for an object inside his sling bag but was immediately restrained by responding officers.
Recovered from "Daniel" was a .38-caliber revolver loaded with six live rounds of ammunition, police said. Officers also recovered a live hand grenade from the sling bag of "George."
The confiscated revolver will undergo ballistic examination at the Southern Police District Forensic Unit, while the hand grenade has been turned over to the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit for technical examination and safekeeping.
Police have yet to determine whether the suspects were involved in other criminal activities as the investigation continues.###
