The Le Bal des Débutantes alum says the bullying narrative is “completely untrue.”

In November 2024, Apple Martin made her society-page debut at Le Bal des Débutantes, the Parisian rite of passage where aristocratic surnames and celebrity lineage share the same parquet floor. She wore custom Valentino, sea-foam silk plissé chiffon, designed by Alessandro Michele and arrived with her parents, Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, plus grandmother Blythe Danner. It was, by any measure, a high-wattage entrance.

Then the internet did what it does. Clips from the ball ricocheted across TikTok, with commenters claiming Martin upstaged fellow debutante Aliénor Loppin de Montmort during a photo moment. Others zoomed in on a split-second expression aimed, allegedly, at her escort, Count Leo Henckel von Donnersmarck, diagnosing it as an eye roll and, somehow, a character flaw. The whispers snowballed into a larger, unverified rumor, that she had been expelled from school for bullying.

This week, Martin answered. On Instagram Stories, she called the narrative “completely false” and said she has “never been expelled from any school, especially not for bullying anyone.” She acknowledged that not everyone has to like her., “ppl not liking me” was her phrasing, but drew a firm line at the accusation. “I am not that type of person and anyone who is close to me knows that.”

Notably, Loppin de Montmort had already spoken up in late 2024, describing Martin as “genuinely the nicest girl ever” and saying she was kind to all the debs that evening. In other words: the supposed feud appears to have existed primarily in comment sections.

Le Bal has long been a theater of projection, a place where lineage, couture and youth collide under chandeliers. Past attendees have included Margaret Qualley and Lily Collins, each carrying famous surnames into a room built on them. That Martin drew attention was inevitable. That attention metastasized into a morality tale says more about the algorithm than the girl in the gown.
