Philippine National Police (PNP) operatives rescued a 16-year-old girl from online sexual abuse and exploitation Monday in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental.
Acting on a verified report, the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG), through its Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit 10, conducted the operation on 19 January.
The rescue was coordinated with the Department of Justice’s Regional Anti-Trafficking Task Force 10 and the Misamis Oriental Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.
The minor, identified by the pseudonym “Therese,” was turned over to social workers for care and assessment. Authorities have launched an investigation to locate the individuals behind the exploitation, with criminal charges pending.
Acting PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. commended the units for their swift action, noting that protecting children in the digital space remains a top priority.
“This rescue reminds us that crimes against children often happen quietly and online, but the harm is very real,” Nartatez said. “The PNP will continue to act fast and decisively to protect them and to hold offenders accountable.”
Nartatez also warned that the internet is “not a hiding place” for those who exploit children and urged parents to remain vigilant regarding their children’s online activities.
The PNP encouraged the public to report suspected cases of Online Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children through official police channels.
