NBI: Don’t post real-time updates on social media as it ‘invites’ thieves

National Bureau of Investigation urged the public—particularly those traveling for the holidays—to practice “digital discipline,” warning that real-time social media posts have become a tool for burglars targeting unattended homes.

The bureau said the excitement of travel often leads to online security lapses, which organized crime groups increasingly exploit.

NBI officials noted that criminals actively monitor social media platforms to identify potential targets.

Investigators said airport or hotel “check-ins” posted online effectively serve as a green light for intruders, as they can reveal how long a residence will remain unoccupied.

To mitigate the risks, the NBI released a five-point safety checklist for travelers: avoid posting real-time travel updates, do not announce that your home is unattended, share vacation photos only after returning home, limit post visibility and review privacy settings, and be cautious of messages or interactions from unknown accounts.

The bureau stressed that while physical security measures such as locks and alarms remain important, “digital oversharing” can render these defenses ineffective.
