A night of giving thanks

Gratitude is not just for blessings but for the people who make life richer.
A night of giving thanks

My husband Glenn and I moved back to the Philippines 48 years ago, and we brought one important cherished tradition with us, Thanksgiving. And through all these years, we have faithfully gathered family and friends to partake in this meaningful celebration of gratitude.

This year, as guests began arriving, the house slowly filled with warmth, soft lights, familiar voices and that comforting feeling of being surrounded by people who matter.

We prepared the dinner table with a mix of traditional thanksgiving favorites and touches inspired by Cebu.

Before we began, our son Eduard took a moment to welcome everyone. He offered special thanks to my brother Edu who flew in from Manila, Freddie Alquiros who travelled all the way from Baguio and Francisco Serafica from Ormoc. He also gave a warm shout-out to our first-timers, designer Philip Rodriguez, entrepreneurs Erwin and Frances Siao and pathologist Randolph Libres.

Glenn then proceeded to introduce the three readers. First was dramatic actress Mayen Tan who reminded everyone of the historical roots of the pilgrims’ feast. She was followed by restaurateur Freddie Alquiros who shared meaningful Thanksgiving messages from various US Presidents. Closing the segment was devoted wife and mother Annabelle Alo, who offered uplifting spiritual reflections drawn from St. John Paul II and Pope Leo, the first American Pope.

The reflections were heartfelt and sincere, reminding everyone of the true meaning of the celebration. Gratitude is not just for blessings but for the people who make life richer.

As dinner continued, the room filled with laughter, stories and gentle teasing that only close friends and family can get away with.

Our home once again felt like a haven where people could relax, reconnect and simply enjoy being together.

By the time the night wound down, our hearts were full. Thanksgiving was not just a dinner, it was a celebration of love, friendship and the joy of gathering under one roof.
