Endangered long-tailed macaque rescued in Angeles City

Angeles City, Pampanga — An endangered Philippine long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis philippensis) was rescued by a resident and turned over to authorities this week.

Corazon Antipolo, a resident of Barangay Sapalibutad, voluntarily surrendered the long-tailed macaque to barangay officials on July 18, 2025.

The turnover was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Barangay Sapalibutad Council, led by Barangay Chairwoman Cristina V. Pineda, along with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and the City Veterinary Office (CVO).

In a statement released by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 3 on 30 July 2025, the Angeles City government confirmed it had received the monkey from Barangay Sapalibutad officials.

The city government then turned it over to DENR Region 3, which transferred the endangered animal to the nearest rescue center in Clark, Pampanga, for thorough examination and rehabilitation.

The Philippine long-tailed macaque is classified as “endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade cited as primary threats to its population.

The DENR urged the public to report and turn over any rescued or captured wild animals to the agency or local authorities to ensure proper care and handling.
