In a deeply emotional social media post, newly crowned Miss World Opal Suchata of Thailand opened her heart to the world—sharing not just a story of cultural connection and personal joy, but also one of unexpected tragedy that will forever shape her reign.
Hyderabad, the host city of the Miss World 2024 pageant, had already become special to Opal. “Since I was crowned Miss World here, this city holds a special place in my heart. And when there is a loss, my heart aches for it,” she wrote.
The 23-year-old beauty queen recalled a cherished visit to the historic Charminar, where she explored a local pearl shop. For Opal, it was more than just a shopping trip—it was a symbolic gesture of unity. “I knew that Hyderabad is a city of pearls, just like my home back in Thailand,” she said. “So, it was my intention to not only support the local community, but also to showcase the cultural combination of my first and second home.”
Inside the shop, she engaged warmly with those around her, laughing and connecting through shared stories. A brief yet profound moment with three young girls and their mother left a lasting impression.
“Some girls asked me for a picture. One of them wore a white dress—her mother told me she insisted on dressing up for me, hoping to look as beautiful. Although she already was,” Opal shared. Another girl wore a zebra-print dress like one she had packed. They made a promise to meet again in matching outfits. Their mother even invited Opal into their home, just behind the shop, where the smell of home-cooked food lingered.
That sweet, fleeting connection would later be tinged with grief.
On May 18, a devastating fire took the lives of those three girls and seventeen members of their extended family. The news shattered Opal, who mourned not just as Miss World, but as someone whose life had been touched by theirs.
“I have no words to describe how my heart aches for them,” she wrote. “They were cheering and praying for me with so much love and hope, and my heart breaks that they didn’t get the chance to witness and celebrate our victory.”
Her tribute resonated far beyond the pageant community, capturing the raw humanity that often goes unseen behind the glamour of a global title.
Opal closed her message with a quiet, powerful prayer:
“May your souls rest in peace in paradise. May your spirits be guided by your love and your mercy. May we meet again in our next life.”
As Opal Suchata begins her reign as Miss World, she reminds the world that compassion, connection, and courage in grief are what truly make a queen.
