Two senior citizens died after collapsing during a poll watchers’ orientation held Friday at the Royce Convention Center inside the Grand Astoria Hotel along Mayor Jaldon Street, Barangay Zone 2.
Authorities said the venue had become overcrowded when the incident occurred. Based on the initial investigation by Zamboanga City Police Station 11 (ZCPS11), the victims reportedly experienced respiratory distress amid the dense crowd. One collapsed at the venue and was given immediate CPR, while the other was transported to the Zamboanga City Medical Center (ZCMC) via ambulance.
Both individuals were declared dead on arrival by attending physicians.
Police and emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene. A joint investigation is now underway by the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) and the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to determine the cause of the incident and assess necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences in future events.
Authorities also reminded the public to observe health and safety guidelines during mass gatherings, especially with the influx of activities leading to the upcoming polls.
