Cadet First Class Jessie Ticar Jr. will graduate summa cum laude of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class SIKLAB-LAYA (Sundalong Isinilang na Kasangga at Lakas ng Ating Bayan Para sa Kalayaan) Class of 2025.

The 23-year-old from Quezon City is one of only four cadets in the 127-year history of the academy to achieve the highest academic honor.

Journey to his 'precious destination'

In a radio interview Thursday, Ticar shared in Filipino, "I decided to enter the PMA, and I believe that was the time God gave me because I really didn’t know what I would do."

"I believe in myself, and my family believes I can do it," he added.

Ticar said his parents initially opposed his decision to enter the academy, as no one in their family had a military background.

"I took the exam without my parents knowing, and the Lord granted me the chance to pass. I showed them that they should trust me. Actually, I aspired to be at the top of the class. I told myself that on my first day. I will truly do my best so I won’t lose their trust," he said.

Ticar shared that his mother sells pens and envelopes to support the family. His father, previously a taxi driver, became unable to work due to illness.

He said he is proud of how his parents continued to support him and his two older siblings despite their challenges.

The top-ranking cadet said he wants to join the Philippine Army after graduation, believing that’s where he can best serve and make an impact.

Asked what advice he would give to young people with similar dreams, he said: "For the youth who are dreaming, I hope you become part of the change. What's really important is the determination to get started."

The graduation ceremony is scheduled for next Saturday, 17 May.
