Heat index in Luzon may hit 45°C

Some Luzon areas, including Metro Manila, suspended face-to-face classes on Thursday, March 6, due to the state weather bureau’s forecast of “danger” and “extreme caution” heat index levels in various areas nationwide.

The heat index in several areas in Luzon is expected to reach up to 45°C this weekend, according to the latest Heat Index report from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)

On Saturday, 3 May, 19 areas, including Pasay City and Quezon City, were under the “Dangerous” heat index levels ranging from 42°C to 51°C. These areas include: 

  • Laoag, Ilocos Norte

  • Dagupan City, Pangasinan

  • Bacnotan, La Union

  • Tuguegarao City, Cagayan

  • ISU Echague, Isabela

  • Baler, Aurora

  • Iba, Zambales

  • CLSU Munoz, Nueva Ecija

  • Cubi Pt. Subic Bay, Olongapo City

  • TAU Camiling, Tarlac

  • Hacienda Luisita, Tarlac

  • Tayabas City, Quezon

  • Sangley Point, Cavite

  • Infanta, Quezon

  • Alabat, Quezon

  • San Jose, Occidental Mindoro

  • Aborlan, Palawan

Sangley Point in Cavite City is forecast to have the highest heat index on Sunday, 4 May at 45°C. Other areas are expected to record heat indices between 36°C to 44°C.

A heat index between 36° to 41°C is classified as “Extreme Caution,” while 42° to 51° is classified as “Danger,” where the risks of heat cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke is high.

PAGASA advised the public to limit outdoor activities, wear light clothing, and to stay hydrated especially during peak heat hours from 10 in the morning to four in the afternoon.
