Indeed, basketball is for everyone.

In celebration of the 29th National Autism Consciousness Week, One Meralco Foundation together with the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) conducted the “Hoops for All” the first autism-inclusive basketball clinic that was tailored to empower youth on the autism spectrum in a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment to learn basketball fundamentals.

The event was thoughtfully designed inclusion initiatives to foster skill development, teamwork, and confidence-building among participants, demonstrating that sports can be a powerful tool for inclusion, socialization, and self-discovery.

This program was also organized by the National Council on Disability Affairs, the Meralco Bolts, One Meralco Foundation (OMF) and the Meralco Employees Savings and Loan Association (MESALA).

“This clinic is not just about teaching basketball; it’s about building bridges and fostering a culture of inclusion where every person on the autism spectrum feels empowered to succeed in whatever they want to do in life,” shared Mona Magno-Veluz, National Spokesperson of the Autism Society Philippines.

A Star-Studded, Inclusive Event

The “Hoops for All” clinic was led by basketball legend Norman Black, alongside professional players from the 2024 PBA Philippine Cup Champion Meralco Bolts, who actively champion inclusion and the youth. Participants enjoyed modified games and activities carefully designed to meet diverse abilities. 

“We made small adjustments to prioritize the individual capabilities of athletes on the spectrum,” shares Meralco Bolts manager Paolo Trillo. “From basic dribbling and passing to fun team challenges, we want the clinic to be an empowering experience for our young people on the spectrum.” 

The unique opportunity to interact with their basketball idols from the Meralco Bolts is the event’s highlight, creating lasting memories for participants and their families. This once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet sports icons emphasizes the inclusive spirit of the event.

A Community Effort

Employees from Meralco, One Meralco Foundation and the Meralco Savings and Loan Association volunteered in providing hands-on support to ensure each participant received personalized guidance and encouragement throughout the session.

 “We thank this partnership with the Meralco Bolts and ASP as this immersive and heartfelt experience deepens our understanding of the diverse communities we serve and brings new meaning to pagmamalasakit as part of the Meralco way of life. Through this opportunity, we gain appreciation and become inspired to be more inclusive and serve better our fellow Filipinos,” said OMF president Jeffrey O. Tarayao.

 The “Hoops for All” basket clinic hopes to foster meaningful socialization opportunities among participants and partners. Making wellness and sports inclusive to those with developmental conditions strengthens the public’s resolve toward acceptance, accommodation, and appreciation of those of the autism spectrum.
