The male leads of 2024’s K-dramas have brought to life a range of compelling characters, each offering charm, charisma, and emotional depth in spades. From the resilient and calculating Jang Tae-sang in Gyeongseong Creature to the sensitive Yoo Ji-hyuk in Marry My Husband, and the vulnerable yet strong Ryu Seon-jae in My Lovely Liar, these characters also present unique personal struggles and paths to growth.

Their journeys — whether about survival, love, or self-discovery — are what make the characters themselves memorable and perhaps attract larger audience and even re-watches. But, it's how each actor embodies their character's journeys that truly captivates those watching and that leaves us wanting more from these standout leading men.

Which male lead from 2024 resonated the most with you, depending on the type of personality or story you're drawn to?

    1. Woo Do-Hwan as Hae-Jo in Mr. Plankton

In Mr. Plankton, Hae-Jo is an orphan navigating a shady enterprise while grappling with the devastating news of a terminal brain condition. With only a few months left to live, he sets out on a poignant journey to find his biological father. Along the way, he crosses paths with his ex-girlfriend, Jo Jae-Mi, and impulsively kidnaps her on her wedding day, adding layers of tension and emotion to the story.

Woo Do-Hwan, who brings Hae-Jo to life, shared that he aimed to channel a sense of freedom while portraying the character. He revealed that the project left a profound impression on him, admitting he felt deeply moved from the very first episode.

    2. Byeon Woo-Seok as Ryu Sun-Jae in Lovely Runner

Sun Jae in Lovely Runner is a top star who has lived in the spotlight since his debut. While his life appears glamorous and enviable, the relentless pressures of the entertainment industry have taken a heavy toll on him.

Beneath the fame and success, Ryu Sun-Jae feels drained and disconnected, grappling with the question of whether this is the life he truly desires. His story delves into the emotional cost of stardom and his journey to find deeper meaning beyond the demands of his fame.

    3. Na In-woo as Yoo Ji-Hyuk in Marry My Husband

Ji-Hyuk is portrayed as a dependable and compassionate coworker of the main character, Kang Ji-Won. While quietly harboring romantic feelings for her, he becomes a crucial ally in her plan to seek revenge on her unfaithful husband and manipulative best friend.

Providing both emotional support and practical help, Ji-Hyuk plays a significant role in Ji-Won’s journey to reclaim her life and dignity, proving himself to be a steadfast presence in her fight for justice.

    4. Kim Soo-Hyun as Baek Hyun-Woo in Queen of Tears

Hyun-Woo is a skilled lawyer with a sharp mind who has risen from a modest background to achieve apparent success. However, his marriage to the affluent and influential Hong Hae-In reveals deep struggles, marked by frequent miscommunication and emotional neglect.

Feeling overshadowed by the power dynamics within his wife’s family, Hyun-Woo grapples with a sense of losing control and growing insecurities. Beneath his confident exterior, his internal conflicts and feelings of displacement play a pivotal role in the unraveling of their relationship.

    5. Jung Hae-In as Choi Seung-Hyo in Love Next Door

Choi Seung-Hyo is a successful and composed architect who has quietly nurtured a long-standing crush on his childhood friend, Bae Seok-Ryu. Beneath his polished exterior, he expresses his feelings through subtle acts of care and affection, offering a striking contrast to Seok-Ryu’s lively and unpredictable nature.

Their dynamic, shaped by playful teasing from their shared past, gradually evolves into a deeper connection. Seung-Hyo’s dependable and steady character becomes a grounding force, drawing him closer to Seok-Ryu as their relationship takes on new dimensions.

    6. Hwang In-Yeop as Kim San-Ha in Family by Choice

San-Ha is a warm-hearted and protective character, though his sharp words can sometimes come across as cold or hurtful despite his good intentions. His complex personality and secret feelings for Yoon Ju-Won create emotional tension, adding depth to the story and complicating the dynamics between the characters.

Beneath his seemingly tough exterior lies a vulnerability that gradually unfolds, revealing the layers of his true self and the emotional struggles he hides from those around him.

    7. Park Seo-Joon as Jang Tae-Sang in Gyeongseong Creature

Jang Tae-Sang is a wealthy and intelligent man whose life revolves around survival after the tragic loss of his mother to Japanese soldiers. As the owner of the House of Golden Treasure, he is known for his quick thinking and sociable nature, though he initially remains distant and detached from others.

Tae-Sang’s emotional growth begins when he falls in love with Yoon Chae-Ok, gradually learning to open up and form meaningful connections. After being infected by Najin, he gains enhanced strength and becomes a skilled fighter, further shaping his journey of survival and self-discovery. His story is one of resilience, personal growth, and the power of love and relationships in the face of adversity.

    8. Im Si-Wan as Lee Myung-Gi aka Player 333 in Squid Game Season 2

Player 333 is a character fueled by desperation, driven to win the deadly games to escape the crushing weight of a massive debt caused by a life-altering decision in his past.

His connections to some of the new participants add layers of complexity to the narrative, deepening the drama as his backstory and motivations unfold. With survival as his ultimate goal, Player 333’s journey is marked by tension and the relentless pursuit of redemption.

    9. Yoo Yeon-Seok as Baek Sa-Eon in When the Phone Rings

Baek Sa-Eon is a deeply complex character, embodying the struggles of maintaining a flawless public persona while grappling with inner emotional turmoil. As a young presidential spokesperson from a prominent political family, he faces relentless pressure to meet his family’s high expectations.

His strained relationship with his wife, Hong Hee-Joo—a sign language interpreter with her own traumatic past—adds further depth to his story. Sa-Eon’s journey takes a dramatic turn when a mysterious phone call forces him to confront long-buried secrets and fight to protect his wife from an impending threat, revealing the lengths he is willing to go for love and redemption.
