The Philippine National Police (PNP) will be on heightened alert to ensure public safety during Simbang Gabi, which begins tomorrow, 16 December.

In an order issued Sunday, PNP chief General Rommel Francisco Marbil directed all police units to implement “comprehensive security measures” in coordination with local government units (LGUs), church officials, and other stakeholders to ensure the safety of “devotees participating” in Simbang Gabi.

Simbang Gabi is a nine-day series of dawn devotional masses observed by Filipino Catholics in anticipation of Christmas, celebrating the birth of Jesus.

Marbil ordered the deployment of Police Assistance Desks (PADs) near churches to assist the public.

“Our priority is to provide a safe and peaceful environment for all devotees participating in this sacred tradition. We have increased police presence in churches and surrounding areas to ensure public safety throughout the Simbang Gabi period,” he said.

He also instructed PNP units to intensify patrols in areas frequently crowded by people, such as public transport terminals, parking areas, and marketplaces.

Marbil noted that the PNP will continue monitoring crime-prone areas to “prevent potential threats” during the holidays.

He urged devotees "to remain vigilant, secure their personal belongings, and report any suspicious activities to authorities."

“The PNP encourages attendees to arrive early at church venues to avoid overcrowding and comply with security protocols,” he said.

Marbil emphasized that these efforts are part of the PNP’s “Ligtas Paskuhan 2024” operations, wherein all police units are tasked to work closely with LGUs, barangay officials, and other law enforcement agencies “to respond to any emergencies or untoward incidents.”

“The PNP remains committed to providing a safe environment for all Filipinos during the holiday season,” Marbil said.
