The Makati Medical Center (MMC) on Thursday called on the public to donate blood.

In a social media post, MMC reshared its announcement from a year ago, featuring red lights switched on in front of the hospital.

“With these turned on in front of the hospital's Tower 1, MakatiMed Blood Bank relays the message that it is in need of blood donations,” the hospital explained.

“During this time of the year, the Blood Bank is usually low on supplies,” it added.

According to MMC, its Blood Bank is open Monday to Sunday, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

For more information, interested donors may call (+632) 8888 8999 local 3016 or send an email to blood.bank@makatimed.net.ph.

The Philippine Red Cross noted that eligible donors must be individuals in good health and feeling well, at least 16 years old, and weighing at least 50 kilograms (kg).

Meanwhile, individuals are temporarily deferred from donating blood if they:

  • Have a fever greater than 37 degrees Celsius.

  • Are pregnant.

  • Had ear or body piercing within the past year or a tattoo less than a year old.

  • Consumed alcohol within the past 24 hours.

  • Were recently vaccinated.

  • Underwent surgery less than a year ago.

Additionally, individuals who cannot donate blood include those with cancer, diabetes, severe lung disease, HIV or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), a history of hepatitis, or unexplained weight loss of over 5 kg in less than six months.

People with ear or body piercings or tattoos may donate blood one year after their procedure.

Blood donations can be done every three months but not exceed four times per year.
