Makati Medical Center has received international recognition for its “Red Light Project,” winning the Community Relations category at the 2026 International Public Relations Association (IPRA) Golden World Awards.
According to the winners’ list released by the global organization, MakatiMed was the sole recipient from the Philippines to win an award this year.
The Red Light Project was developed by the hospital’s Hematology Section through its Hospital Blood Transfusion Committee to address chronic blood supply shortages. The initiative uses a visual alert system that activates red lights at the top of the hospital building whenever blood supply drops to critical levels, signaling an urgent need for voluntary donors.
The campaign also educates the public on how blood shortages can directly compromise patient care.
Two other entries from the hospital were named finalists in the healthcare and sustainability communications categories.
This marks the second time MakatiMed has won an IPRA award. The hospital was previously recognized for its online crisis communications during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Established in 1990, the annual IPRA Golden World Awards recognize global excellence in public relations practice, judging entries against international standards.
“This reinforces the bayanihan mindset among us, demonstrating how collective, voluntary efforts of donors reinforce a culture of compassion and social responsibility in the face of a major healthcare issue,” said Dr. Saturnino P. Javier, MakatiMed medical director and interim co-president and CEO.
Javier added that the project has been vital in mitigating blood supply challenges while raising awareness about the critical role adequate reserves play in delivering safe, high-quality patient care.
