Military foils Basilan ‘bomb attack’

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Authorities in Basilan province foiled a possible bomb attack after they recovered two Improvise Explosive Devices fabricated by two members of the Abu Sayyaf Group in Hadji Mohammad Ajul town.

Armed Force of the Philippines-Western Mindanao Command commander, Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr. disclosed that soldiers from the Joint Task Force-Basilan recovered the IED in Barangay Seronggon on Tuesday.

JTF-Basilan commander Brig. Gen. Domingo Gobway said the components of the IED include two rounds of rocket-propelled grenade, high explosives; one round of 40mm high explosive grenade launcher; four non-electric blasting caps; a commercial detonating cord; and a commercial time fuse.

Gobway said a concerned resident of the village reported to them that the IEDs were fabricated in an abandoned house at Sitio Marang-Marang in Tuburan Proper.

He identified the two ASG IED fabricators as a certain Tawakal Bayali, alias Jaber and a certain Mudzfal, both operating under ASG sub-leader Pasil Bayali alias Kerah.

The 39th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team immediately proceeded to Barangay Seronggon to recover the explosives.

Rosario commended the troops of JTF-B for preventing the ASG from sowing terror in the peaceful communities of Hadji Mohammad Ajul.
