“The Tracy Anderson fitness method is making its rounds in Manila,” says Pamy Moran, 30, dance instructor for four years. “I actually love both, and I don’t really see it as Pilates on its way out and Tracy Anderson ‘coming in.’
Moran says that as an instructor who has to keep in step with fitness trends, she thinks that people are just starting to want something different after the huge Pilates/reformer class boom.
Pilates is much more focused on control, alignment core strength and intentional movement, whereas Tracy Anderson fitness has more of that dance fitness feel with lots of repetition, small movements, choreography-style movements, sculpt with light weights and some muscular endurance.
Pilates is a type of exercise that is centered on low-impact exercise system that focuses on core strength, flexibility, posture and controlled breathing. And, hereabouts, it is done in a specialized studio.
At present, Moran says that the Anderson Method is still relatively new in Manila and classes are offered online.
It is Moran’s background as an instructor in dance that attracted her to fitness at the start, so naturally she loves that Tracy brings the constant movement and choreography aspect back in.
But, she adds, Pilates gives her a different kind of challenge through control and precision.
“Actually, I think that the exercises complement each other really well and I enjoy doing both depending on what my body feels like doing on a certain day.
Of the Anderson Method, Anderson says, “I have spent decades studying bodies, solving real physical problems and being accountable for outcomes. That is not influence. That is skill. Bodies don’t care about trends. Bodies respond only to what is true.”
