  • The Philippines continued its remarkable run in the WBSC Women’s Baseball World Cup, clobbering Great Britain, 6-2, for its second straight victory at the ASPAC Secondary Stadium in Tainan, Chinese Taipei on Wednesday.

Just hours after blanking Cuba, 6-0, the Filipina batters wasted little time asserting their dominance, erupting for four runs in the opening inning behind Richelle Toledo, Veronica Velasco, Ivy Capistrano and Shyla Celis.

Cassandra Inot added another run in the second inning before Erika Fernandez scored in the fourth off a bunt from Angel Bedaño to give the Philippines a commanding 6-2 advantage.

Great Britain briefly threatened to mount a comeback after Darier Malone scored in the second inning and Laura Hirai cut the deficit to 5-2 in the third.

But the Filipinas tightened their defense and held the British scoreless over the final two innings to seal the victory.

The win came just hours after the Philippines posted its first-ever World Cup victory with a 6-0 shutout of Cuba, allowing the national team to improve its record to 2-1 in its debut appearance in the prestigious tournament.

The Filipina batters are now in strong contention for one of the top three spots that will earn a ticket to the World Cup Finals in Rockford, Illinois next year.

Up next for the Philippines are crucial games against host Chinese Taipei and Venezuela on Thursday at the same venue as the Filipinas look to sustain their momentum and complete a historic run to the World Cup Finals.
