The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine Air Force have launched a formal investigation into the conferment of awards, promotions, and authorized insignia for reserve personnel following online controversy surrounding former lawmaker Mike Romero.
Air Force spokesperson Col. Ma. Christina Basco confirmed Thursday that the Reserve Command and the AFP are actively investigating the military service, status and recognitions of Romero, who served as a reserve brigadier general and wing commander of the Tactical Operations Wing Reserve Northern Luzon.
The inquiry centers on verifying whether proper procedures were followed in granting medals and badges, as military regulations require all uniform decorations to be supported by official general orders and verified documentation specifying the basis of service.
The investigation coincides with a broader systemic review of AFP policies governing how reservists are recruited, promoted, and decorated to ensure organizational integrity and meritocracy.
“The AFP remains committed to upholding the integrity, meritocracy, and credibility of its processes,” the military said in a statement, adding that any verified irregularities or policy violations will be addressed under existing regulations.
Amid the ongoing probe, Romero formally resigned from the reserve force and relinquished his post effective 19 August.
In a letter to the AFP chief of staff, Romero welcomed the validation process, expressed confidence in official military procedures and maintained that all his decorations are backed by official records.
