Alex Eala’s Cincinnati Open campaign came to an end Tuesday after the Filipina tennis star fell to American Amanda Anisimova in a three-set battle in the Round of 32.
Eala, ranked No. 20 in the world, took the opening set but could not hold off the world No. 10, who rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory in their first career meeting.
The 21-year-old Filipina entered the match seeking her 10th career victory over a Top 10 opponent. Anisimova, seeded ninth in Cincinnati, instead recovered after dropping the first set to deny Eala another upset.
Eala reached the third round after Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse retired from their rain-delayed Round of 64 encounter. The Filipina was firmly in control, leading 6-1, 3-0 when Ruse was forced to stop.
The Cincinnati campaign followed another strong stretch for Eala on the North American hard courts. She captured the Washington title earlier this month before reaching the Round of 16 in Toronto, where her seven-match winning streak was snapped by Belinda Bencic.
Eala now turns her attention to the next stage of her hard-court campaign as she builds toward the US Open.
