The Philippine National Police (PNP) has tightened waste management measures across all its offices and stations nationwide to help tackle the country’s growing garbage problem, officials said Friday.

PNP chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered police personnel to practice strict waste segregation and maintain clean workplaces, emphasizing that law enforcers must set an example for the public.

The move follows directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to improve community waste management and curb improper garbage disposal, which officials cite as a major contributor to urban flooding.

“As law enforcers, police personnel are expected to set good examples to the people we serve, and in this particular case, the proper waste management and segregation,” Nartatez said in a statement.

The order comes after Marcos inspected the garbage-choked Baclaran River in Parañaque City on Wednesday and ordered the immediate clearing of massive debris that blocked the waterway during heavy monsoon rains.
