National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) director Melvin Matibag defended the agency on Tuesday against allegations that it is being politically weaponized, asserting that investigators operate strictly within the law and are guided by evidence.

“We’re all accused of being weaponized, that we take side, when it comes to the administration it’s like this or that. But that isn’t true. To us, we’re always guided by evidence and process and what is stated in the law,” Matibag said, addressing claims that the bureau targets critics of the government.

Matibag maintained that the bureau has not exceeded its authority since he assumed office, stating that all actions taken under his leadership have strictly adhered to the agency’s statutory mandate.

Addressing the conduct of field operations, Matibag cited that NBI agents are instructed to maintain professionalism and exercise restraint even when encountering hostility or profanity from subjects of an investigation.

He stressed that because NBI agents are persons in authority, they must not misuse the position or respect associated with their office.

Matibag’s statements came amid an ongoing NBI investigation into an alleged plot to frame Executive Secretary Ralph Recto, a case he described as far more severe than an ordinary criminal matter due to current political tensions.

“It’s alarming. This is no longer the normal routine. It’s very difficult. We all know we are heavily polarized with political clashes,” Matibag said.

Despite the political climate, Matibag insisted the NBI will remain impartial and execute its duties based on the rule of law, physical evidence, and its legal mandate.
