Some phones ease you in. The nubia Neo 5 Max does the exact opposite.

Within minutes of turning it on, I realized this wasn’t designed for someone like me. I’m a minimalist when it comes to technology. I prefer clean interfaces, fewer distractions and devices that quietly do their job. The Neo 5 Max is unapologetically different.

RGB lighting glows from the back panel. Gaming triggers sit on the frame. Menus are filled with gamer-centric features and customization options. This is a phone that wants you to know exactly what it is.

Then again, it has “Max” in its name.

A giant that takes getting used to

The first thing you’ll notice is the size.

The 7.5-inch 1.5K IPS LCD display with a 120Hz refresh rate dominates the front of the device, and it’s immediately one of its biggest selling points. As someone with relatively small hands — not height-related, by the way — using the phone comfortably took some adjustment. In fact, I wrote most of this review using the Neo 5 Max itself, and my fingers initially struggled to adapt.

The result? A flood of typos. Eventually, muscle memory kicked in, and I found myself appreciating the generous screen real estate far more than I expected.

My new YouTube machine

I probably spend more time watching YouTube than actual television these days.

During the review period, the Neo 5 Max quietly became my primary entertainment device.

The large display made watching videos genuinely enjoyable, while the stereo speakers were loud enough that I often found myself lowering the volume instead of wishing for more. I would’ve appreciated a little more bass, but for casual viewing, podcasts and movies, the audio experience was more than satisfactory.

Reading was another pleasant surprise.

Whether I was browsing articles or catching up on manga, the massive display meant less zooming, less scrolling and a more immersive experience. Combined with the smooth 120Hz refresh rate, reading for long periods became surprisingly comfortable.

Battery life that refuses to quit

The review unit arrived with around 73 percent battery remaining. I expected to plug it in before going to bed. Instead, it lasted roughly a day and a half. That included hours of YouTube, messaging, web browsing, photography, reading, social media and occasional gaming.

The 7,100mAh battery is easily one of the phone’s strongest features. Battery anxiety simply disappeared during my time with the device. When it finally needed charging, the included 45W fast charging helped get it back up quickly, while bypass charging is a thoughtful addition for gamers who want to reduce heat during long gaming sessions.

Let the gamer decide

While I still enjoy video games, I’m no longer spending entire weekends grinding ranked matches.

So I handed the phone to someone far more qualified: my gaming-addicted nephew.

Predictably, he spent the first few minutes scrolling through short videos before finally launching a game.

His verdict was refreshingly honest.

The screen felt smooth. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Call of Duty: Mobile played well with consistently fluid performance. There were occasional frame drops in more demanding titles like Fortnite, but he still described the experience as very playable.

For the audience nubia is targeting, that opinion probably matters more than mine.

Software isn’t for everyone

This is where personal preference comes in. The Neo 5 Max is packed with gaming-centric software features. Gamers will probably love that.

For someone like me, however, it occasionally felt overwhelming. RGB effects, gaming overlays, customization menus and performance options are available almost everywhere. None of these are bad. They’re simply designed for a different audience.

If you’re a minimalist, expect a learning curve.

If you’re a gamer, you’ll likely appreciate how much control the phone gives you over your experience.

Beyond gaming

Powering the Neo 5 Max is MediaTek’s Dimensity 7100 processor built on a 6nm process, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, expandable by up to 1TB through a microSD card.

In everyday use, the phone handled multitasking without issue. Apps opened quickly, switching between them felt seamless and I rarely encountered noticeable slowdowns outside of graphically demanding games.

Photography isn’t the centerpiece here, but the 50-megapixel main camera delivered respectable daylight photos, while the 16-megapixel front camera proved more than capable for video calls and social media posts. If cameras are your top priority, there are stronger options in this price range. If gaming and media consumption come first, the Neo 5 Max makes a much stronger case.

The phone also supports 5G, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, dual-band Wi-Fi, Dolby Atmos stereo speakers, a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, dual-SIM functionality and IP64 dust and splash resistance. Add Neo Triggers 5.0 and bypass charging, and it’s clear this device was designed with mobile gamers in mind.

Price

The nubia Neo 5 Max carries an official retail price of P25,999. However, from 1 to 9 August 2026, nubia is offering the phone at a promotional price of P17,999.

At that price, the value proposition changes dramatically. You’re getting a massive high-refresh-rate display, one of the biggest batteries available in a smartphone today, gamer-focused hardware and a feature-rich software experience at a price well below many competing gaming phones.

Verdict

The nubia Neo 5 Max knows exactly what it wants to be. It isn’t trying to imitate a flagship productivity phone. It isn’t trying to be sleek or understated.

Instead, it embraces gaming. Everything feels turned up. The display is huge. The battery is huge. The software is huge. Its personality is huge.

As someone who falls outside its target audience, I still found myself enjoying it more than I expected. It became my YouTube screen, my manga reader and even my writing companion while finishing this review.

Would I recommend it? If you’re a gamer, absolutely. If you’re looking for a clean, minimalist Android experience, probably not. But that’s okay. The nubia Neo 5 Max knows exactly who it’s for, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything else.
