BAGUIO CITY — Days of heavy rains have left several major roads and bridges across the Cordillera Region either closed or operating under strict travel restrictions, forcing motorists to take detours and navigate hazardous conditions, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Cordillera.
The latest road advisory shows that landslides, road slips, eroded bridge approaches, and structural damage have disrupted traffic in Benguet, Apayao, and Kalinga, with authorities urging motorists to exercise extreme caution.
In Benguet, the Baguio-Itogon Road at Sitio Goldfield in Barangay Poblacion, Itogon remains impassable. Motorists are advised to use the Ucab-Midas Road as an alternate route.
Meanwhile, Pico Bridge 2 along the Pico-Lamtang Road has been reduced to one lane after cracks were discovered on its girders.
Apayao has sustained some of the region’s most extensive damage, with several bridges now restricted to light vehicles.
Along the Apayao-Ilocos Norte Road, Bunot Bridge 2 in Barangay Tanglagan and Ayayao Bridge in Barangay Eva are open only to light vehicles because of damaged abutment slopes and scoured bridge footings. Road slips have also narrowed several sections to one lane in the barangays of Parina, Tanglagan, Eva, Namaltugan, Tubungan and Butao.
The Claveria-Calanasan-Kabugao Road is likewise limited to light vehicles at Sugoc Bridge in Barangay Ninoy after its approach slab was scoured. One-lane traffic is also being enforced in portions of Santa Elena, Eva, Naguillian, Eleazar, Ferdinand, Kabugawan and Namaltugan.
Further south, Pudtol Bridge in Barangay Emilia along the Kabugao-Pudtol-Luna-Cagayan Boundary Road is also restricted to light vehicles, while road slips have reduced traffic to one lane in Barangays Aurora and Lower Maton.
The Ayaga-Santa Marcela-Flora-Lasam Road has likewise been narrowed to one lane in sections of Barangays Bagutong and Malayugan in Flora.
In Kalinga, authorities have imposed strict weight and height restrictions on key bridges to prevent further damage.
