Phivolcs records 287-quake swarm off Pangasinan

The Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded an ongoing earthquake swarm offshore of Bolinao, Pangasinan, with 287 earthquakes documented as of Friday morning.
According to Phivolcs, the earthquake swarm began at 11:15 a.m. on 27 May.
As of 7 a.m. on 26 June, the agency had recorded 287 earthquakes, including one that was felt at Intensity II.
The earthquakes ranged from magnitude 1.8 to 5.1 and occurred at depths of 2 to 47 kilometers.
Phivolcs said an earthquake swarm is a series of seismic events occurring within a specific area over a relatively short period without a single dominant mainshock followed by aftershocks. Such swarms may last for days, weeks, or even longer.
While it remains uncertain whether the activity could lead to a stronger earthquake, the agency urged the public to remain vigilant and prepared.
Phivolcs also advised residents in coastal communities to watch for natural tsunami warning signs, including strong and prolonged ground shaking, a sudden retreat or rapid rise in sea level, and a loud roaring sound from the ocean.
If any of these signs are observed, residents should immediately evacuate to higher ground without waiting for an official tsunami warning.
The agency urged the public to follow advisories from local government units and official updates from Phivolcs, which continues to monitor the seismic activity.
