In a celebration worthy of both Hollywood and the high seas, Robert Downey Jr. has officially been appointed godparent of the Disney Cruise Line’s newest and biggest vessel, the Disney Adventure.
Taking the stage with his signature charisma, Downey described the ship as a “chance to experience 100 years of classic stories all in one place like never before. How far will you go? Because it's time to travel into the unknown and maybe find yourself in places you've never been, where you can splash to infinity and beyond and be the hero of your own story.”
He added, “Now, before the captain sets this ship of sail we have to take care of last bit of business. The ship value to bring it it's a tradition that goes to years. And since this is now officially the biggest ship in Disney's fleet, it's going to need a massive, gargantuan soul, and they asked me if I'd be the godparent. I said, ‘But of course!”
The maritime custom of selecting a godparent to bless and safeguard a ship ahead of its maiden voyage dates back centuries and is believed to bestow good fortune. With Downey stepping into the ceremonial role, the Disney Adventure launches with unmistakable star power.
Downey’s connection to Disney runs deep. His portrayal of Tony Stark — the brilliant hero at the heart of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — helped transform the franchise into the most successful film series in box office history. That era culminated with Avengers: Endgame, which earned more than $2.79 billion globally. In 2019, he was inducted into the Disney Legends. He is also set to return to Marvel as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, arriving in theaters 18 December.
Fittingly, the Disney Adventure celebrates more than a century of Disney storytelling across seven immersive themed areas, including several Marvel-inspired experiences. At Marvel Landing on the upper decks, guests can board Tony Stark’s Ironcycle Test Run, the first roller coaster ever featured on a Disney Cruise Line ship and the longest at sea.
In Disney Imagination Garden, the live production Avengers Assemble! delivers high-impact stunts and special effects in a battle between Marvel heroes and villains. Young recruits can also visit the Marvel WEB Workshop inside Disney’s Oceaneer Club to test prototype suits and take part in interactive Avengers training simulations.
The ship also offers the hallmarks guests expect: character encounters, Broadway-style stage shows, elaborately themed staterooms and concierge accommodations, and more than 20 dining and lounge venues featuring international and Asian-inspired cuisine.
