COTABATO — One of the suspects in the grenade attack that wounded 22 people during New Year celebrations in Matalam, Cotabato, was killed in a police operation, authorities confirmed on Friday.

The Cotabato Police Provincial Office (CPPO) identified the suspect as Hamad Ansa, a resident of Barangay Kilada. According to CPPO spokesperson Police Lt. James Warren Caang, Ansa was positively identified by witnesses as the individual who hurled a fragmentation grenade at revelers in Barangay Dalapitan, triggering panic and injuring dozens.

Police said Ansa was the subject of a law enforcement operation when he was killed. Authorities did not immediately release further details of the encounter but noted that the suspect had an outstanding warrant of arrest for a separate murder case, based on records from local officials.

The grenade explosion occurred as residents were welcoming the New Year, turning a festive gathering into a scene of chaos. All injured victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, with police earlier saying none were in critical condition.

Authorities assured the public that follow-up operations are ongoing to identify and apprehend any accomplices involved in the attack. Police also reiterated their commitment to strengthening security measures to prevent similar incidents and ensure public safety in the province.
