President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday called on newly promoted generals and flag officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and uphold national security, as he administered their oath of office at Malacañan Palace.

In his speech, Marcos underscored that the oath-taking ceremony was more than a formality, describing it as a reaffirmation of a “sacred trust” anchored on respect for the Constitution, service to the Filipino people, and loyalty to the Republic.

“We are reminded today that this oath-taking is a reaffirmation of a sacred trust: respect for the Constitution, service to the Filipino people, and loyalty to the Republic,” the President said.

Marcos stressed that with their promotions come greater responsibilities, urging the officers to lead with wisdom, restraint, and moral clarity as they assume higher positions within the military hierarchy.

The Chief Executive noted that the stars worn by the newly promoted officers symbolize the weight of their duty to protect the Filipino people, defend the country’s territorial integrity, and uphold democratic freedoms.

He added that this responsibility is shared with military reservists, whom he described as vital force multipliers in strengthening the AFP’s overall capabilities.

“This ceremony serves as a powerful affirmation that your loyalty is anchored to the Constitution, to our democratic institutions, and above all, to the people,” Marcos said.

The President also reiterated his administration’s commitment to modernizing the AFP, citing ongoing efforts to enhance the military’s readiness in addressing both traditional and emerging security challenges through improved training, international cooperation, and strengthened operational capabilities.

As part of efforts to improve the welfare of soldiers, Marcos pointed to the recent increases in base pay and daily subsistence allowances for military and uniformed personnel.

“All these reflect our principle that honoring service means ensuring that those who serve are given the support and dignity that they rightfully deserve,” he said.

Marcos likewise acknowledged the families of the officers for their sacrifices and steadfast support, saying their role is crucial in sustaining a military that serves the nation with honor and dignity.

He concluded by urging the AFP to remain united in its mission to serve the Filipino people and contribute to building a stronger and more secure Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines).
