Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, through his Malasakit Team, extended aid to 83 households affected by a fire in Barangay Milagrosa, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan last 13 December.
During the distribution of assistance at the Gregorio Oquendo Memorial School Covered Gym, Go reiterated his commitment to improving disaster preparedness and recovery efforts.
The Malasakit Team, in coordination with Councilor Elgin Damasco, provided financial assistance, grocery packs, and water containers to the affected families. The senator also acknowledged the national government for conducting assessments to ensure families receive support for rebuilding their homes.
Go used the visit to underscore key legislation he authored and co-sponsored aimed at disaster mitigation. He highlighted Republic Act 12076, the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act, which was signed into law on 6 December 2024. The measure mandates the establishment of permanent, safe, and well-equipped evacuation centers across all cities and municipalities.
“I appeal to my colleagues in the government. Prioritize evacuation centers because this is the law, rather than wasting funds on flood control projects that a few are using as a milking cow,” Go said, adding that these centers are essential for safeguarding the dignity and well-being of disaster-affected communities.
The senator also championed RA 11589, the Bureau of Fire Protection Modernization Act, which provides for a 10-year program to increase personnel, acquire modern firefighting equipment, and enhance training to improve fire response and prevention capabilities.
Additionally, Go is advocating for the passage of Senate Bill No. 415, the proposed Rental Housing Subsidy Program, which he refiled in the 20th Congress. If enacted, the measure would provide rental assistance to displaced families as they transition to permanent housing after a disaster.
