PNP wary of fake super typhoon videos online

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Monday warned the public against sharing unverified and misleading photos and videos online that falsely claim to show the impact of super typhoon “Uwan” and the earlier typhoon “Tino.”
Acting PNP Chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez urged netizens to verify information before posting on social media, noting that several circulating materials have been altered or are deepfake content designed to cause alarm.
“The PNP warns the public against posting or sharing unverified videos online on the supposed impact of super typhoon “Uwan.” Be discerning, as some of these are deepfake videos that may cause fear or alarm among our fellow citizens,” Nartatez said.
The PNP issued the warning shortly after the Armed Forces of the Philippines clarified that a widely shared photo of an elderly couple stranded in floodwaters was taken in Mexico, not in the Philippines, as social media posts alleged.
Nartatez stressed that the PNP supports government efforts to maintain public safety and accurate situational awareness during calamities.
