Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said Tuesday that police forces are prepared to assist in training parents and teachers to identify violent acts, criminal involvement, and behavioral warning signs among children.

Nartatez said the initiative aligns with directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary (DILG) Jonvic Remulla to bolster school safety measures nationwide.

Local police units are prepared to collaborate with the Department of Education (DepEd) and community stakeholders to deliver training sessions focused on early threat detection and proper intervention protocols, the PNP chief said.

“Protecting students and teachers in schools requires efforts from various stakeholders,” Nartatez said.

“And we in the PNP are ready to extend assistance and impart knowledge through training sessions that will educate parents and teachers in the interest of the safety and welfare of learners,” he added.

The DepEd currently conducts protection sessions targeting bullying, online sexual exploitation, and violent extremism. The agency is also expanding its Kaagapay Program, an initiative that trains parents to recognize behavioral red flags.

Nartatez cited that specialized units, including the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group and the Women and Children Protection Center, can lend technical expertise to these programs.

He also stressed that safeguarding students requires broad cooperation across communities rather than relying solely on schools and law enforcement.

“While concerns regarding violence in schools persist, the PNP is committed to bolstering our initiatives and partnerships with other stakeholders to ensure the security of our learners and teachers,” Nartatez said.

The police force is also coordinating with education officials and advocacy groups on active shooter safety drills designed to enhance campus preparedness without causing unnecessary trauma to students.
