A fresh face is making waves in Philippine theater, and his name is Juan Calma. With striking presence, bold charisma, and a fearless attitude, Calma is poised to become one of the most promising young actors to watch as he takes center stage in Walong Libong Piso, the much-anticipated debut theatrical production from Bentria Productions under the direction of veteran playwright and director Dr. Dante Balboa.
Staged at Teatrino Promenade, Greenhills this 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, and 16 August, Walong Libong Piso offers an original narrative penned and directed by Balboa and produced by Engineer Benjamin Austria, combining social relevance, heart, and wit. For Calma, who is stepping into the world of theater for the first time, this production marks a bold beginning — and he’s meeting the challenge head-on.
“Kahit naman sinong aktor, pangarap ang makapag-stage play. First time ko po ito kaya nandoon ang kaba at nerbiyos,” he admitted in an exclusive interview. “Sa rehearsal pa lang kinakabahan na ako.”
But the nerves haven’t stopped him. A former fitness instructor and self-described “gym rat,” Calma brings not just physical strength to the role, but also emotional depth and a relentless drive to grow. As he immerses himself in the rigorous world of theater, he’s already seeing the transformative impact of the craft.
“Sobrang laki po ng impact sa akin. Na-enhance ang acting ko, at lalo na ‘yung speaking voice — mas klaro at mas malakas. Pati sa galaw, mas malaki. Ang dami kong natutunan,” he shared.
Indeed, stage acting demands more than just presence — it calls for clarity, precision, and emotional stamina. And Calma is learning fast. His dedication to the rehearsal process, under Balboa’s seasoned direction, reflects his hunger to prove that he’s not just another pretty face — he’s a performer with promise.
In a previous press conference, Calma boldly declared, “Wala akong kiyeme. Palaban ako.” A statement he’s living up to, bringing everything he has into this debut role. With a fearless attitude and a drive to excel, Juan Calma is more than ready to take the leap.
Walong Libong Piso is not just a stage for a story — it’s a platform to launch rising stars, and Calma stands at the forefront of this theatrical revolution. With every line, every movement, and every moment on stage, he is poised to leave an impression that will last beyond the final curtain call.
Keep your eyes on Juan Calma — the stage may be his beginning, but the future looks boundless.
