Scouting goes a long way.
The Philippine national women’s football team made sure it prepared hard against hosts Cambodia after a convincing 6-0 win last Wednesday in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup at the National Olympic Stadium in Phnom Penh.
Meryll Serrano, who was hailed the Player of the Match, said they analyzed the Cambodians during their 1-1 draw against Hong Kong last Tuesday and used it to their advantage.
The Philippines is on top of Group G with two straight wins.
“To be honest, we watched Hong Kong against Cambodia. I was actually quite nervous about this game when we got the first and second goal, I thought we were doing good,” Serrano said.
“I mean, it’s been a good two games now and I think we just have to keep going.”
The Filipinas were relentless against the Cambodians from start to finish.
Serrano scored in the 19th and 36th minutes as the Filipinas inch closer to a slot in the Asian Cup in Australia next year.
Alexa Pino (18th), team captain Hali Long (48th), and Chandler McDaniel (56th) all joined in the scoring frenzy.
The Cambodians scored an own goal after Somrit Nimol tried to deflect a shot attempt in the 40th minute but went inside the net.
The Philippines will face Hong Kong on Saturday at 5 p.m. (Manila time) for the top spot.
Only the top team of each group will get outright berths to the biggest women’s football competition in Asia.
Serrano said they will approach their next game with the same intensity and discpiline they showed in the past two matches.
“We have one more game against Hong Kong and we really wanna go and get all the points,” Serrano said.
