Singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo went viral after speaking out on Instagram about the case of Adriana Smith, a 31-year-old brain-dead nurse who was kept on life support due to Georgia’s strict abortion law.
Under the state’s “heartbeat bill,” a fetus with a detectable heartbeat is considered a legal person, thus granting it the right to life. Because of this, Smith remained on life support solely to carry her pregnancy to term, despite being declared brain-dead.
Rodrigo expressed her outrage in an Instagram Story:
“So disgusting and disturbing. Adriana Smith deserved better.”
Her post quickly gained attention, with women’s rights advocates rallying behind her and amplifying calls for reproductive justice. However, it also sparked backlash from pro-life supporters, with some saying “any mother would be willing to make sacrifices for her child.”
Rodrigo’s statement reignited fierce debate between pro-choice and pro-life camps across social media, with many users citing her influence among young audiences as both powerful and polarizing.
