Filipino-American pop star Olivia Rodrigo has surprise-released a new song titled “Serena Joy,” a politically charged track reportedly inspired by the The Handmaid’s Tale character of the same name.

The song first became available as a limited-edition CD sold exclusively at an independent record store in Tustin, California, where all 500 copies reportedly sold out within hours. Fans later shared snippets of the track online, sparking widespread discussion about its themes.

According to early reports, the song draws inspiration from Serena Joy, one of the central figures in Margaret Atwood’s dystopian world. In the story, Serena helps build the authoritarian regime of Gilead before ultimately becoming trapped by the very system she helped create. The character has long been viewed as a symbol of power, complicity, and the consequences of oppression.

The surprise release comes ahead of Rodrigo’s upcoming Daisy Chain Fields Festival, with fans speculating that the song could signal a new creative direction for the Grammy-winning artist. While Rodrigo has yet to officially comment on the track’s meaning, “Serena Joy” is already generating conversation for its apparent political and literary influences.
