A beloved slice of Filipino pop culture is making a grand comeback — this time, on stage. Bagets: The Musical, the theatrical adaptation of the iconic 1984 coming-of-age film, is set to open in the first quarter of 2026 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.
This highly anticipated production is a collaboration between Viva Communications Inc., Newport World Resorts, and the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA).
The original Bagets film, directed by Maryo J. de los Reyes and headlined by young stars Aga Muhlach, William Martinez, J.C. Bonnin, Herbert Bautista, and Raymond Lauchengco, defined a generation. Its exuberant portrayal of Manila youth in the 1980s — grappling with friendships, dreams, heartbreaks, and self-discovery — continues to resonate four decades later. With its pulsating soundtrack and relatable storytelling, Bagets quickly cemented itself as a cultural touchstone.
Now, this cinematic classic finds new life through the hands of PETA, known for its powerful musical productions such as Rak of Aegis and One More Chance: The Musical. PETA infuses its signature blend of social awareness and theatrical flair into this reimagining, merging nostalgia with contemporary sensibilities.
Spearheading the production is Maribel Legarda, the acclaimed director behind Rak of Aegis, who brings both a deep respect for the source material and a bold creative vision. The book is written by PETA’s Artistic Director, award-winning playwright J-mee Katanyag, who promises a script that honors the spirit of the original while offering fresh, socially relevant insights for today’s audience.
Guiding the project are PETA President Melvin Lee and Executive Director Anj Heruela, both respected figures in the local theater scene. Their leadership underscores the production’s ambition: to celebrate Filipino youth and creativity across generations.
Auditions for the musical are scheduled from late July to early August 2025, giving emerging talents the opportunity to be part of this theatrical landmark.
Bagets: The Musical is more than just a nostalgic throwback — it’s a celebration of resilience, friendship, and growing up in the Philippines, reimagined through the vibrant lens of Filipino theater. With powerhouse collaborators and an enduring legacy behind it, this production is set to capture the hearts of both longtime fans and new audiences alike.
