Ruru Madrid on ‘Lolong’: ‘This show changed my life’

Published on

What began as a groundbreaking action-fantasy series has now become a defining chapter in the life and career of Kapuso Primetime Action Hero Ruru Madrid. As Lolong: Pangil ng Maynila nears its grand finale, Ruru reflects on how portraying the courageous warrior Lolong has shaped not only his craft but also his character as a person.

In a heartfelt interview on 24 Oras, Ruru shared how deeply the series impacted him beyond the screen.

“Itong Lolong ’yung nagpabago talaga sa buhay ko. Hindi lang sa pagiging artista, kundi sa pagiging tao,” he said. “Sa kabila ng lahat ng mga binabato sa’yo ng mundo—injury, pandemic, aksidente—ito ’yung nagsilbing lakas sa akin para lalong pagbutihin ang ginagawa ko.”

More than a role

Since its first season, Lolong has followed the story of a young warrior battling forces of evil with the help of his gigantic ally, Dakila. Just as the character grew stronger through adversity, Ruru experienced his own trials throughout the series’ production—injuries, delays, and the many emotional and physical demands of the role.

But like Lolong himself, Ruru persevered. And with every episode, he discovered more about his own resilience.

An adventure

Joining Ruru on this unforgettable journey are his co-stars Martin del Rosario and Shaira Diaz, who play Ivan and Elise. Both actors expressed their gratitude for being part of the show, highlighting how Lolong challenged their limits and unlocked new dimensions in their acting.

“We’re lucky talaga na ma-experience ’yon,” shared Shaira. “Sinubok kami dito. May mga na-unlock tayo na akala natin hindi natin kayang gawin. Pero dito, nakita natin ’yung range namin. ‘Wow, thank you Lolong. Nailabas mo talaga.’”

Martin echoed the sentiment, praising the collaborative spirit behind the scenes.

“Makikita mo sa bawat cast at sa buong team—director, creatives—lahat talaga binibigay ang 100 percent para sa ikagaganda ng show,” he noted.

Return of a giant

As the finale draws near, Lolong fans can look forward to the much-awaited return of Dakila, the colossal crocodile and loyal companion to Ruru’s character. For Ruru, Dakila’s comeback brings a wave of nostalgia.

“Very nostalgic, kasi bumabalik din ’yung season one vibes. May mga eksenang kaming dalawa lang ni Elise—tulad ng dati. Pero ngayon, mas lumawak na ang mundo. Mas marami nang kasama. Mas malaki ang laban,” he shared.

With the conclusion of Lolong: Pangil ng Maynila just around the corner, the cast is preparing for what Ruru teases as a scene unlike anything seen on Philippine television.

“May eksena kaming napag-agreehan na never ko pang napapanood sa buong buhay ko. Very exciting talaga ang Lolong,” he said. “Siguro magtatapos siya sa TV, pero habang buhay siyang mananatili sa puso nating lahat. Hindi ko masasabi na ito na ang huli—marami pang possibilities.”

As Lolong comes full circle, it leaves behind a powerful legacy—not just of action and fantasy, but of growth, perseverance, and heart. Ruru Madrid’s journey mirrors that of his iconic character: tested by challenges, shaped by experience, and ultimately transformed.

Lolong: Pangil ng Maynila airs weeknights at 8:00 p.m. on GMA Prime, with a delayed telecast at 9:40 p.m. on GTV. You can also stream it live online via Kapuso Stream.

Whether it’s the end or just a new beginning—one thing’s for sure: Lolong will forever hold a place in the hearts of its audience.
